Information Technology(IT) highly recommends SLU students purchase a computer through this program.
In Fall 2009, half of the class of 2013 took advantage of the SLU computer program. Our program for 2010 will continue to include an option to have your laptop shipped home prior to school opening, though we do encourage you to wait until Orientation to pick it up. Past experience indicates that many notebooks arrive on campus with viruses, browser hijackers, and other problems which have been "caught" while at home using a network without the built-in protections of the SLU network.

Of course in addition to the very popular Dell�notebooks, Brewer Bookstore continues to offer a full educational purchase program for Apple's Mac computers through the St. Lawrence University Portal on the Apple Education Site!
Advantages of theSLU Bookstore/IT Program

Three or four year on-site warranty coverage on most Dell� laptops, providing protection and full service throughout your undergraduate career. Apple warranty service is available for from 1 to 3 years. IT recommends a full 3-year warranty to cover the incoming undergraduate.
(Dell and Apple notebook batteries come with a limited 1-year warranty.)

Either Three or four year ACCIDENTAL insurance on laptops is now available on Dell�. (this is specific coverage for liquid spills, dropping of computer, or other popular accidents in the residence halls).

Anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed and configured on Dell notebooks.

Current version of Microsoft� Office (Pro version) installed.

Pre-configured to automatically perform important Windows� updates.

Mac

Assistance configuring your Mac for the SLU network and email.

Inexpensive user install versions of Office for Mac.

The Information Technology Department at St. Lawrence University is certified to provide service to both Apple� and Dell� computers.

Students can arrive on campus and begin computing immediately. Just plug it in and turn in on! (Due to changes strengthening security procedures, students will need to go to the web at http://infotech.stlawu.edu/wireless and follow the instructions for configuring SLU-secure at or by calling the IT HelpDesk at x5770.)
